What Is the NFPA 80 Test?

NFPA 80 sets the national standard for fire door safety. It includes the minimum requirements for the installation, inspection and maintenance of fire doors and other opening protectives, such as fire shutters and windows.

At VTEC Laboratories, we offer a fire door drop test to help you stay in compliance. A drop test is required after a fire door repair or installation. NFPA 80 also stipulates that the test be performed at least annually to ensure the door works properly in a fire situation.

How We Conduct Our NFPA 80 Test

Our test includes a visual inspection, an operational check and two drop tests — one to confirm the door closes properly and one to confirm the linkage resets correctly.

During the visual inspection, we check for proper bolts, jamb attachments, fusible link locations and other details to ensure the door is properly installed. We also look for damaged or missing parts and inspect ancillary equipment like control panels and release devices.

We then test the door to make sure it operates easily with a full range of motion. If your door passes the visual and operational tests, we'll perform the drop tests in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. Your door must fall at least 6 inches per second and not more than 24 inches per second to be in compliance.

Once we determine whether your fire door is in compliance, you'll receive an official test form with your results. If your door passes the testing, you'll also receive a certification label indicating the inspection and testing date.
