MIL-DTL-24640 Test
The MIL-DTL-24640 cable specification covers low-smoke, lightweight electrical cables suited for Navy shipboard applications. Electrical cable testing ensures products meet the detail, performance and design requirements and can determine voltage and temperature ratings.
At VTEC Laboratories, our lab contains a wide range of environmental, chemical, mechanical and electrical test capabilities that can be modified, adjusted or augmented to meet the needs of your applications.
What Is the MIL-DTL-24640 Cable Specification?
The MIL-DTL-24640 cable specification covers lightweight and low-smoke electrical cables employed for Navy shipboard uses. The M24640 shipboard cable is offered in various constructions, including shielded or unshielded and watertight, non-watertight and watertight with circuit integrity.
Parts are available with temperature ratings from minus 20 degrees Celcius to 105 degrees Celcius with a voltage rating of up to 600 volts. This cable can have anywhere from two to multiple conductors, and they come in 20 or 26 American Wire Gauge (AWG).

By looking at the part number, VTEC can tell if cables follow the M24640 Federal Specification. M24640 part numbers can be broken down into the following sections:
- Shielding: "N" stands for not shielded or blank cable, "D" is for a double overall shield and "O" stands for an overall shield.
- Armoring: "U" is for unarmored cable and "A" is for armored shipboard cable.
- Dash number: Part numbers can become even more specific with each specification sheet. The dash number is a reference to a variation of the cable and follows the slant sheet number.
- Specification sheet number: A number and backslash follow every part number, indicating the cable's slant sheet. This is where you can find detailed information such as construction materials and ratings.
- Federal specifications: Each part number begins with M24640, demonstrating that the part abides by MIL-DTL-24640 specifications.
